Au, St. Gallen

Au is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen in eastern Switzerland. Au is located in the constituency of the Rhine Valley.

Geography

Au is in the lower Rhine Valley on the west bank of the Rhine. The municipality comprises the settlement cores Au ( Crest Mountain with Moon) with the village Haslach parts, hardware, Monstein, and the hamlet of Upper and driving parts of the municipality Heerbrugg (Coat of Arms river with bridge ). The hamlet of Upper Fahr ( derived from upper ferry) is a bit off the south- east of the settlement core of Au. Originally it was a border station at the ferry which led across the Rhine. The place Heerbrugg probably corresponds to the 1078 St. Gallen from Abbot Ulrich III. built fortress Hêrburch. Heerbrugg extends beyond the boundaries of the political community to Berneck Au, Balgach and Widnau.

History

1316 Diken called Auwe, Au from the original settlements Au Haslach, hardware and Monstein, at the constriction between Heldsberg and the Rhine was born. Originally belonging to Reichshof Lustenau and from 1395 standing at Hohenems rule, was under Au from 1490 to the Federal territory. These were in 1593 as court - Widnau Haslach a private Lower Court. In 1775 they separated into the courtyards Au, Widnau and Schmitter. The property in Lustenau, the "Swiss Ried ", was preserved. 1766-76 attain the Counts of Harrach, the Lower Court on Au, 1782-98 those of Salis - Soglio. By 1853 the latter included the Monstein castle. 1803 was followed by the establishment of the canton canton of St. Gallen and Au remained until 1805 with the community Berneck united.

1721 a chapel was built in Au, which was later replaced by church buildings (1804 and 1925 ). The establishment of a Catholic parish Au was 1802, and thus a first detachment of Berneck.

The connection to the railway network Rorschach Sargans took place in 1858 with the two stations Au and Heerbrugg. In Heerbrugg then grew into a new industrial settlement which Au share with the communities Balgach, Berneck and Widnau. The train station of Heerbrugg located on the floor of Au.

In the late 19th century flourished the embroidery industry, with the result that ascended from 1900 to 1910, the foreign population of 8.5 % to 32.4 %. Since 1952 there is a town in Au of the Reformed Church.

Population

Of the 5'778 inhabitants, in the political community Au survived the end of 1990, 3,370 people lived in the village of Au and in Auer 2'408 district of Heerbrugg.
