Augustin Verot

Augustin Verot PSS ( * May 23, 1805 in Le Puy, France, † June 10, 1876 in St. Augustine, Florida, USA) was Bishop of Saint Augustine.

Life

Augustin Verot, there are over whose exact date of birth of different information entered into the Order of Sulpician and received on September 20, 1828 Sacrament of Holy Orders.

On December 11, 1857, he was named by Pope Pius IX. Vicar Apostolic of Florida and titular bishop of Danaba. The Archbishop of Baltimore, Francis Patrick Kenrick, donated to him on April 25th of that year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Richmond, John McGill, and the Bishop of Savannah, John Barry. The inauguration took place on 3 June 1858.

On July 23, 1861 Verot was also appointed Bishop of Savannah. During the American Civil War, he became known for his advocacy for the retention of slavery, which he clearly occurred but for the humanization of slavery and the rights of freed slaves. Nevertheless, he was in the northern states as rebellious bishop ( rebel bishop ) respectively.

With the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate of the Diocese of Saint Augustine on March 11, 1870 Verot became its first bishop. At the same time he was released from the leadership of the diocese of Savannah.

At the First Vatican Council, he participated as a Council Father and argued for the rights of African Americans and ecumenical cooperation.
