John Moore (bishop of St Augustine)

John Moore ( * June 27, 1835 in Delvin, County Westmeath, Ireland; † 30 July 1901 in Jacksonville, Florida, United States) was Bishop of Saint Augustine.

Life

John Moore came to the United States at the age of 14 years. His family settled in Charleston, South Carolina. He received on 9 April 1860, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

On February 16, 1877, he was named by Pope Pius IX. Bishop of Saint Augustine. The Bishop of Charleston, Patrick Neeson Lynch, gave him on 13 May of the same year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Wilmington, Thomas Albert Andrew Becker, and the Bishop of Savannah, William Hickley Gross CSsR. The inauguration took place on 20 May 1877.

The Bishop Moore High School in Orlando is named after him.
