Aurora, Western Cape

Province

Aurora is a small town in the municipality Bergrivier, district, West Coast, Western Cape Province in South Africa. It is located about 180 kilometers north of Cape Town in Sandveld, at the foot of the Piketberg Mountains. The town has 578 inhabitants ( as of 2011).

History

Aurora was originally founded as a Church, so that the residents of the area had no long distances to worship. The result was in 1866 the first building on the farm Rietvlei. The present church was completed in 1908, the first pastor was Reverend CR Ferreira, a former prisoner of war in Ceylon. He named his daughter Ceylonia Aurora (from Latin aurora ' dawn ' ). According to her later town was then named.

Flora

Due to its location between the sandy plain and the 1,000 meter high mountains, the bandwidth of the vegetation surrounding the town is large: Proteacaeae ( as Aulax pallasia, Leucadendron discolor, Ericaceae, Restionaceae, Kniphofia, Aristea, Watsonia, Dilatris, Metalasia, Succulents and xerophytes ) are found here in large numbers.
