Bagridae

Hemibagrus planiceps

Sting catfish ( Bagridae ) live in rivers and lakes of Africa, Western, Southern and Eastern Asia.

Features

They are scaleless, her body is stretched or stocky. Your mouth is often slightly inferior and surrounded by three to four pairs of barbels. Chest and dorsal fin are supported by strong, barbed spines ( hence the name ). The short dorsal fin has six to seven, rarely to 20 soft rays. The anal fin is short, the caudal fin usually forked. All spiked catfish have a dorsal fin, which is often very large. In many species, the eyes of the skin are overgrown. The fish are, depending on the type, four centimeters to 1.65 meters long. Most are nocturnal or crepuscular.

System

Both the monophyly of the Bagridae as well as the relationship to other catfish families are uncertain and subject to the systematics of constant change. Joseph S. Nelson indicates 18 genera and 170 species.
