Baksan

Baksan (Russian Баксан ) is a city in the southern Russian republic of Kabardino -Balkaria with 36 860 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is situated on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus about 25 km north-west of the Republic capital Nalchik at Baksan, a right tributary of the opening into the Terek Malka.

Baksan forms a separate urban district and is also the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city is situated on the M29 highway Rostov -on-Don - Azerbaijani border, which is expanded here freeway -like and is run as a beltway south-west to the city.

History

A village on site of the present town was first mentioned in documents in 1748. 1822 a fortified settlement was built as part of the Caucasus line of defense at the former southern border of the Russian Empire. Another settlement was founded in 1891 by settlers from Central Russia and Ukraine.

Gradually, these settlements grew up together; 1960 was connected Staraya Krepost (after Kabardinian princely family Kuschmasoko or Kabardino Kutschmasukino ). In 1964 the town was an urban-type settlement status in 1967 and the municipal law.

In 2003, the area lying over on the right bank of the Baksan large village was Dugulubgei (formerly Kysburun 3-j/Kysburun treti ) incorporated, so that the population since the last census in 2002 rose sharply. Some years later, however, the village was again under the city circle Baksan independently under the modified name Dygulybgei.

Economy

In Baksan there are works for radio electronics and vehicle spare parts as well as the textile and food industries.

Above the town is on the river Baksan Baksan the water power plant.
