Prokhladny

Prochladny (Russian Прохладный ) with 59 601 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) is the second largest city in the Russian republic of Kabardino -Balkaria in the North Caucasus.

Geography

The city is located in the northern foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, approximately 150 km north-east of Elbrus and 52 km north-east of the Republic capital Nalchik. Nearest city is Maisky 13 km as the crow away.

History

The town was founded in 1765 as a settlement of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. In the 19th century it was a military outpost of the Cossacks on the southern border of Russia to the Caucasus. By 1825 the settlement was called Prochladnaja. She received in 1937 under the name Prochladny the official status of a city.

In World War II conquered associations of the 1st Panzer Army ( Army Group A) of the Wehrmacht the village, but in the wake of the North Caucasus Operation of Soviet forces in January 1943 could be liberated from the German invaders back.
