Maysky, Kabardino-Balkar Republic

Maisky (Russian Майский ) is a city in the Russian republic of Kabardino -Balkaria in the North Caucasus. It is the main town of the same name Rajons and has 26 755 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Maisky is close to the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus on the Terek River, about 40 kilometers southwest of the capital of Republic of Nalchik. Nearest towns are Prochladny, Terek and Nartkala (all three about 15 km from Maisky ).

History

1819, the military outpost " Prischib " was founded on the high road to Georgia, which was reorganized in 1829 to Staniza " Prischibskaja ". 1875 was two miles south railway station " Kotljarewskaja " which is still in operation today. 1888 a settlement was founded by the Cossack village, which in 1920 " Prischibski " and 1925 in " Maisky ", literally so " Mai city ", has been renamed.

The settlement and the Cossack village were united in 1959. 1965 received the resulting community the status of a city.
