Balloch, West Dunbartonshire

Balloch is a small town in West Dunbartonshire in Scotland with about 3800 inhabitants ( 2001).

Location

It is located on the southwest tip on the banks of Loch Lomond. In the West, the A82 runs right past the city, in the south lie the neighboring towns of Jamestown and Alexandria. The name comes from the Gaelic word bal, meaning " village", so Balloch means " village on the hole."

History

The Balloch Castle castle belonged to the Earls of Lennox, who from 1238 to 1390 held the land here. 1850 introduced a railway line to Balloch to also convey to trippers to the already existing since 1817 steamer trips on the Loch.

Attractions

  • Drumkinnon Tower, postmodern castle on the shore of the lake. Therein lies the newly-built Loch Lomond Shores Visitor Centre for touristic purposes.
  • Balloch Castle was built on the ruins of a derived from the fortress in 1238 by the architect Robert Lugar 1808 for John Buchanan of Ardoch. The Rhododendron Park therein is known.
