Banatul Philharmonic of Timișoara

The Banat Philharmonic ( Filarmonica romanian Banatul ) is a musical establishment of the West Romanian city of Timişoara in the Banat region. It consists of a symphony orchestra, a choir and various ensembles of chamber music. The building of the Philharmonic Hall is located in the first district Chetatea, close to the Romanian Orthodox Cathedral.

History and occupations

The Philharmonic Society was founded in 1871 in what was then Temesvár. The orchestra had guest appearances in many European countries, eg in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Italy, the former Yugoslavia, in the Netherlands and in Spain.

Initially held its concerts at the opera. Since 1969, the Banat Philharmonic organizes the festival Timişoara muzicala, initially every two years and every year since 1980. Since 1981 also the George Enescu Music Festival ( Zilele muzicale George Enescu ) is organized annually in September.

Building management

The building of the Banat Philharmonic was built in 1929 from local funds.
