Bandırma (also Bandirma, Banderma, Panderma, Panormos; Greek Πάνορμος Κυζίκου ) is a Turkish port town on the southern edge of the Marmara Sea in the province of Balıkesir. The city was called in ancient Panormos ( Πάνορμος ). It is a district town with 122 010 inhabitants ( as of 2012) and is located in the Bay of Bandırma.

Bandırma lies on the route between Izmir and Istanbul. From Istanbul, the city can be reached by ferry in about an hour and 45 minutes. On the outskirts of the district town there is a military airfield.

Districts

Levent

The District Levent is the highest point in the city. In Levent skyscrapers and apartment blocks are built mainly. They became a sort of symbol of Bandırma, since they already see from far out of town.

Livatya

Livatya lies at the foot of the mountain on which Levent is. Livatya is the eastern coast of Bandırma. In this area there is a savannah -like landscape with few houses.

100.Yıl

The name of the district 100.Yıl literally means the hundredth year. It borders on Kayacik, another district of Bandırma. On the Feast of Sacrifice ( Bayram ) of the sacrificial animal market takes place there. The cemetery is at the end of the main road that leads out of Bandırma.

Flora & Fauna

To cityscape is especially palm trees. Otherwise characterize fig trees and savanna -like areas of the countryside.

For the wildlife probably the Kuscenneti National Park at Manyas Gölü ( Manyas Lake) is the most important location. It is used by many to North Africa attracting birds spend the winter or as a resting place. Here you will find many species of birds, raptors and songbirds to flamingos. In the summer you can watch on the coasts of cormorants. Also, lizards, snakes and turtles are common here, they live mainly in the rocky landscape of Livatya and Levent. In summer you can also watch dolphin schools on the coasts.

Economy

The city has numerous industrial settlements. About the Sea of ​​Marmara boron from kirka is mainly exported. Very well known are the many chicken farms.

Sports

Bandırma has with the basketball club Banvit BK Since 2004, a representation in the highest league of Turkish Türkiye Ligi Basketbol. In summer 2011, has ascended to the highest Turkish league with Bandırma Kırmızı the second basketball club from Bandırma.

With Bandirmaspor the county seat since the 1960s, a football team played for a long time in the second highest division of the Turkish TFF 1 Lig. Since the summer of 2010, the club participates in the game action in the third- highest division of the TFF Lig second part.
