Barfold, Victoria

Barfold is located 104 km north-west of Melbourne on the road from Kyneton Heathcote after the Australian state of Victoria.

Place

The place has a community hall, the Barfold Hall, and an Anglican church, the Barfold Union Church. The Barfold Post Office opened at some distance from the present town center in the south of the town on 1 November 1861. This was renamed in 1867 in Langley, as a new post office, which opened a few months earlier, was renamed from Emberton in Barfold. The post office was closed in 1957 by Barfold, that of Langley in 1970.

Environment

Geologically significant is the Barfold Gorge, a four- kilometer-long canyon with a depth of 80 meters, two waterfalls, basalt columns and lava quarries. Around the village cattle, olives and wine is cultivated.

Personalities

Barfold was the birthplace of William Watts, the Premier of Victoria from 1912 to 1913.
