Baroque (grape)

Baroque is a white grape that is now a local rarity of the Béarn region in the French wine-growing region of Sud -Ouest. Even at the end of the 19th century it was widespread. In the opinion of the French ampelographers Pierre Galet it was brought by pilgrims on their way back from Santiago de Compostela in Spain. In written treatises the variety is described only from the 18th century. It provides today in the appellation Tursan high alcohol wines with a fruity aroma and a strong acid ( acid → (wine) ). It is gladly taken as a co- partner to the varieties Sauvignon Blanc and Gros Manseng. The 3-star chef Michel Guérard, according to Jancis Robinson sat down one particularly for the preservation of the species.

In France, the clones 351, 390, 391 and 392 are approved for growing quality wines. The Rebzüchter François Baco interested in starting in 1911 for this variety and moves them briefly in the center of his aspirations of new varieties, since it reacts very susceptible to powdery mildew and black rot of the vine. Baroque was later part Basques Durquety as crossing partners of the new varieties Semebat and Liliorila. Durquety discovered beyond the graubeerige Baroque rose, which resulted from a mutation of the Baroque.

A study published in 2007 study shows that the varieties Baroque, Manseng Noir and Tannat are genetically very closely related. There is also a striking similarity to the species and the Malbec variety is genetically Claverie also closely related to this group. The frequently published opinion, Baroque was a crossroads of the Folle Blanche grape varieties x Sauvignon Blanc, has not been confirmed in this study. It is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.
