Batabanó is on the Gulf of Batabanó city and a municipality in the south of the Cuban province Mayabeque. By 2010, the municipality belonged to the defunct province of La Habana.

The town's origins date back to an indigenous settlement. The region was called by its inhabitants Matabanó. 1688 then the present settlement was officially founded. The capital of the municipality of the same name Batabanó was in 1898. Around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century there were numerous Mallorcan emigrants to Batabanó that originated primarily from where Andratx and then lived on sponge diving.

The municipality has 25,664 inhabitants in an area of 186.2 km ², representing a population density of 137 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Economically significant is especially the port, which is used both historically and today the trade with the Isla de la Juventud, fishing and due to fertile soils agriculture. This is especially the rice and banana cultivation of importance.

The region offers a rich fauna and flora. The Great Egret, the gannets and the turkey vultures are here at home for example. Also, here tree rats and the Cuban Boa live.
