Battle of San Germano

(Also called Battle of Mignano ) The Battle of San Germano was the last battle of the Austro- Neapolitan War between an Austrian army commanded by Laval Nugent of Westmeath and the Neapolitan army commanded by Joachim Murat. The battle began on 15 May 1815 and ended on May 17, when the remaining Neapolitan troops were overrun at Mignano.

After his defeat at the Battle of Tolentino, Murat had declined to San Germano. There Murat reinforced his army with the Armée de l' Intérieur ( Army of the Interior ) which he had left as a reserve for the defense of Naples. However, even with this reinforcement was already melted to only about 15,000 men Murat's army. The armed force of General Nugent was marched in Florence and arrived on April 30 in Rome. From there he marched to Ceprano where he had a minor skirmish with local militia. After receiving news of the defeat of Murat at Tolentino, Nugent tried to cut off the retreat path Murat Naples.

On May 14, he approached Murat's camp at San Germano. The following day, Murat decided to attack and drove the Austrian reconnaissance before he directly attacked the Austrian positions. However, the main Austrian army was followed by General Murat's army Bianchi of Tolentino and now began to encircle the Neapolitan troops. Since the attack of the Neapolitans failed and they suffered substantial losses, Murat now moved back to San Germano and went on the defensive. But as soon as Nugent's army approached took the Neapolitans panic and they retreated quickly. Here, the army separated into a smaller part under Murat, who retired to Capua and marched towards a larger share of Mignano.

There the remaining 6,000 Neapolitans were supported by approximately 1,000 hussars of hunters and frontiersmen smashed. Most Neapolitans were immediately fled after the start of the battle, about 1,000 were taken prisoner by the Austrians. Because now disbanded his army fled Murat on 19 May just before the commanding general Neapolitan Carascosa petitioned from Italy to peace, which led to the Treaty of Casa Lanza.
