History

Maffei built in 1896 on their own account a locomotive for the Bavarian State Exhibition. With dome wheels of 1,640 mm diameter it was designed as a multi-purpose locomotive. After the exhibition, the Bavarian State Railways bought this locomotive, and after extensive testing they ordered further locomotives, but in a reinforced model and with 1.870 mm coupled wheel, so as pure express locomotives. Between 1899 and 1901 yielded Maffei 42 copies.

The CV had a four-cylinder compound engine of the type de Glehn, where the forces acting on the second coupled axle low pressure cylinders were outside - located between the bogie and the first coupled axle - and the forces acting on the first coupled axle high pressure cylinder inside. A superheater have not had the locomotives. The CV could have a maximum towing capacity of 160 tons at maximum only a few years to be used for heavy express train service. Already in 1903 the locomotives wandered into subordinate services from, could keep for a long time there though.

17 machines had to be issued after the First World War in France. The German Reichsbahn took another 22 copies as the class 17.3 with the numbers 17301-17 322 They were decommissioned until 1930.

The vehicles were with Tender respondents the type bay 2'2 'T 21,5 equipped.
