Beidaihe District

Beidaihe (Chinese北戴河 区, pinyin Beidaihe qū ) is a municipality of the prefecture-level city of Qinhuangdao in the east of Hebei province of the People's Republic of China. The municipality has an area of ​​70.14 km ² and 70,000 inhabitants ( end of 2004).

The renowned beach resort is mainly known to many members of the Politburo of the Communist Party spend their summer holiday on its beaches. The beaches are therefore reserved for the privileged part of party officials and wealthy foreign tourists. Location

Beidaihe is 4 hours by train, 2 hours by direct train or 30 minutes by air northeast of Beijing at the Bohaiküste and is one of the most famous seaside resorts of China. A 10 km long beach extends from the mouth of the Dai- river to the Jingshan Hill.

History

Its importance as a seaside resort Beidaihe became only came as British engineers who were engaged in the construction of the railway line Tianjin - Shanhaiguan for recreation there. Foreigners and rich Chinese could build villas, which burned during the Boxer Rebellion, but was later rebuilt.

After 1949 Beidaihe became a resort for workers, and a number of sanatoriums were built. But top officials such as Jiang Qing had property here.
