Béla Varga (wrestler)

Béla Varga [be ː lɒ vɒrɡɒ ] ( born July 2, 1889 in Kiskunfélegyháza, † April 3, 1969 in Budapest) was a Hungarian wrestler.

Career

Béla Varga was an outstanding Hungarian wrestler from the time just before and just after the First World War. He was a member of the Budapest clubs Atleta body (BAC ) or Magyar Atlétikai Club (MAC). Varga began in 1907 with the rings and started in the then usual Greco- Roman style.

His international career began in 1910 when he competed at the World Championships in Vienna in the heavyweight division and won the same title. This World Cup was played in only two weight classes to 75 kg of body weight over 75 kg body weight and had like most other international championships those years unofficial character. It started doing only wrestler from Austria and Hungary.

In 1912, a European championship was held in Budapest. Varga started doing light heavyweight (up to 82.5 kg of body weight) and won the title again. In the final battle he defeated Karl Breslauer Paulini. In the same year he represented Hungary at the Olympic Games in Stockholm. He wrestled there excellent and won the bronze medal less than 29 participants. Against Anders Ahlgren of Sweden and Ivar Böhling from Finland he had to admit defeat here. In 1913 he won in Budapest again the title of European Champion in the light heavyweight division. His toughest opponent was doing the Dane Harald Christensen, he was able to defeat though.

After the First World War Varga was also in three other international championships, including the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, at the start. But he could not win more medals. Meanwhile, a new wrestler generation had grown up, against the Varga had no chance. Carl Westergren and Rudolf Svensson from Sweden, Edil Rosenqvist and Onni Pellinen from Finland and Robert Rupp of Germany were the protagonists of this generation.
