Belene

The small town of Belene is situated in northern Bulgaria in the province Pleven. It is located directly on the Danube, the nearest town of Svishtov. Gained fame through the Belene Located on the island of Belene labor camp, where many opponents of the regime were murdered during the communist regime.

Catholics

The city is home to two Roman Catholic and an Orthodox church. Although Catholics in Bulgaria make up a tiny minority of 50,000 faithful, put them in Belene, with its 6,000 inhabitants, the Roman Catholic majority.

Nuclear power plant Belene

In the recent past Belene was known by the planned construction of the Belene nuclear power plant. The NPP should be about 2012 to the network. With the exit of the investor RWE in October 2009, the completion of the project was already uncertain.
