Bengt Nordenberg

Bengt Nordenberg ( born April 22, 1822 in Jämshög, Blekinge, † December 18, 1902 in Dusseldorf ) was a Swedish painter of the Düsseldorf school.

Life

Nordenberg in 1822 as the son of tenant Per Jönsson North ( 1785-1854 ) and his wife Sissa Bengtsdotter born in the southern Swedish city Jämshög. Although the large family was poor - Nordenberg had nine siblings, his father sent him to Karlshamn to the school. Nordenberg, who likes to read and began to draw early, had the opportunity to go at the age of twelve years with the painter Brodin in Sölvesborg in teaching. 19 - year old, he became his apprentice. 21 -year-old, he enrolled in art school, a Stockholm, but he had a lack of money to return home and go to work. In 1846 he started at the Stockholm Academy again with the painting studies. His soon issued it first paintings have been awarded five silver medals.

Until about 1854 Nordenberg studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Theodor Hildebrandt, interrupted by short trips to Sweden. In Dusseldorf Nordenberg worked in the studio of freelance make Norwegian genre painter Adolph Tidemand, who became his artistic role model. 1855 married Nordenberg in Lekaryd the Swedish Nanny Maria Charlotta Sutthof ( 1831-1905 ). 1856 Nordenberg received a travel grant from the Swedish state, which enabled him to study for one and a half years with Thomas Couture in Paris. After a brief return to the Rhine, he traveled to Rome in the autumn of 1858. But he soon returned to Dusseldorf, where he lived as a freelance artist until his death in 1902.

From 1856 to 1889 he was a member of the Düsseldorf artist club paintbox. Private lessons were Nordenberg from 1856 the Swede Peter Eskilson ( 1820-1872 ), from 1877, the Swedish Augusta Jensen ( 1858-1936 ) and from 1873 to his nephew Karl Henrik Nordenberg ( 1857-1928 ), who like himself until his death as a freelance Painters in Dusseldorf lived. Honors awarded by medals achieved Nordenberg in Stockholm (1845, 1847, and 1848), Lyon ( 1866) and London ( 1879). Work (selection)

The focus of the north hill work lay in the genre painting. His favorite subject was the life of the rural population in the Swedish provinces of Blekinge, Dalarna and Skåne which he represented with the techniques and iconography of the Düsseldorf School. But Nordenberg also created portraits and illustrations, also sacred images, such as for the churches of Asarum, Gårdsby, Jällundtofta, Kungsbacka, Kyrkhult, Öljehults, Pjätteryd, Stenbrohult Tingsås and Unnaryd.
