Berkhamsted [ bɜ: kəmstɛd ] is a historic town in England which now has some 19,000 inhabitants. The place is located in the west of Hertfordshire between places Tring and Hemel Hempstead. Berkhamsted is part of the District or Borough Dacorum.
The place name has undergone over the centuries a number of changes, the current form dates from 1937, was previously called the church, among other Berkhampstead, Great Berkhamsted and Berkhamstead.
In Berkhamsted the National Film and Television Archive of the British Film Institute is located.
History
Berkhamsted was the end point of the Norman Conquest of England of the year 1066, where William the Conqueror after his campaign submission London and the remaining Anglo- Saxon nobility waited.
Berkhamsted Castle was rebuilt in the 1080s years in stone and the preferred residence of the kings of the families of the Rolloniden and Plantagenet. It remained a royal castle until it was abandoned in 1495. The population served at the stones of the castle, of which remains today only a little left.
In Berkhamsted the oldest shop in the UK, which was dendrochronologically dated to 1277-1297 is. There are evidence that it was the shop of a jeweler or goldsmith ( 173 High Street ).
