History

Prior to the formation of a unified community of Greater Berlin in 1920 there were in the city different, independent of each other, businesses, public transport conducted. So there was the 1868 privately founded General Berliner Omnibus Actien Society ( ABOAG ), 1897, also private, established company for electrical high and subways in Berlin ( elevated railway company) and some street railway companies. The latter combined in 1923 to urban Berlin tram -GmbH.

However, there was no co-ordinated timetables or fares. This was felt to be an intolerable situation, especially against the background that the urban area is huge with a size of about 900 km2. Ernst Reuter, who took over in 1926 the Department of Transport and utility services within the magistrate, then advocated to end this abuse. On March 9, 1927, the Berlin tram operating company, the elevated railway company and the General Berliner Omnibus AG concluded the so-called interest shared contract with the 20- cent - unit rate between the three transport came into force on 15 March 1927. The tariff allowed the one-time transfer within a means of transport or the tram or subway, from 1 January 1928 to the bus.

However, it turned out that this was not sufficient to bring about a fair balance of interests between the three companies ( each wirtschaftet continue on its own, higher tax expenses of private bus and metro opposite the municipal tram company, high investment, associated high taxes on capital, at the elevated train, but low conversion ). To resolve these problems under one roof, the Berlin transport company ( BVG) was established with 400 million Reichsmark capital on 10 December 1928.
