Adrian Frutiger

Adrian Frutiger ( born May 24, 1928 in Interlaken in Interlaken ) is a Swiss type designer. He is one of the decisive creators of Swiss typography.

Biography

After a typesetter teaching in Interlaken and one development at the Zurich School of Design at Alfred Willi Mann and Walter Käch Frutiger worked as a graphic designer in Zurich. In 1952 he became a member of the Parisian type foundry Deberny & Peignot, In 1962 Frutiger his own graphic design studio in Arcueil near Paris, along with Bruno Pfäffli and André Gürtler. He taught for several years part-time at the Ecole Estienne and École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Since 1992 he lives in Bremgarten near Bern.

Frutiger's 1978 published book Man and his character is considered to be the standard work on sign theory for practical graphical application, for example for the design of a logo. The book was translated and published in seven languages.

His two most famous writings are the linear sans Univers and designed for the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport Roissy, an early form of Frutiger. In addition, Frutiger designed numerous other writings, such as the Avenir, Centennial, iridium, Meridien and Serifa. Its optimized for machine readability OCR-B was elevated in 1973 to the ISO standard.

Since 2003, road signs in Switzerland are labeled with the font ASTRA Frutiger Standard and ASTRA - Frutiger highway.
