Bhiwandi ( Marathi भिवंडी, Bhivaṇḍī ) is a city in Thane district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It has about 710,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).

Bhiwandi is located 50 kilometers north-east of Mumbai on National Highway 3 ( Agra - Mumbai ). Together with the cities of Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Dombivali, Mira- Bhayandar and Vasai - Virar, it forms the agglomeration of Greater Mumbai. The average height above sea level is 24 meters.

The town developed from a small town with marathischer and konkanisch - Muslim population since the 1930s, the center of the textile industry in Maharashtra. It has the largest number of looms in the country.
