Bluefields is the capital of the autonomous region of Atlántico Sur on the Atlantic coast of the Central American state of Nicaragua; is called the region even after the original inhabitants of Miskito coast.

General

The place Bluefields goes back to a pirate settlement in 1601 and named after the Dutch privateer Abraham Blaauwveldt, or co-founded by this. On October 11, 1903, the city charter was granted by President José Santos Zelaya. Until 1986 the city was the capital of the province of Zelaya, which was divided in that year in the Autonomous Regions of Atlántico Atlántico Sur and Norte. Today, the city has 50 178 inhabitants ( 2005); the corresponding municipio extends over an area of ​​4638 km ². Only about 3 % of the population are among the Miskito.

A continuous land connection to the capital Managua 383 km away does not exist. The journey from the capital takes place first by bus to El Rama and from there by boat on the Rio Escondido to Bluefields.

The official language in Bluefield is Spanish, however, the native language of the local Creole English is ( Miskito Coast Creole, and Nicaragua Creole English). 85% of the inhabitants of the Atlántico Sur region are bilingual.
