Blues for Salvador is a studio album by Carlos Santana from 1987. It is one of the albums that appeared under his name and not under the band name Santana. Carlos Santana dedicated the album of his former wife Deborah.

The album

In February 1987, Santana was released the album Freedom. Except for the two keyboardist Tom Coster and Gregg Rolie all the musicians of the band Santana were also involved in the solo album Blues for Salvador. The mostly instrumental pieces show different sides of Santana. The album is a tribute to Charles Mingus, the resulting from a soundcheck in 1983 Bailando / Aquatic Park, an instrumental version of the piece Deeper, Dig Deeper from the album Freedom as well as an alternate version of Hannibal from the album Zebop! . In the pieces ' Trane and the 1985 recorded live Now That You Know yourself Santana moved to hard rock climes and the title track is a blues of his early years. The song he wrote for his daughter Bella and as an expression of admiration for the guitarist Wes Montgomery, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, T-Bone Walker and John McLaughlin.

Reception

Blues for Salvador won the 1989 Grammy Award for Best Performance by a rock instrumentals.

William Ruhlmann of allmusic emphasized, among other impressive pieces especially ' Trane with Tony Williams on drums forth. He gave the album four and a half out of five stars.

About the title track Matthew Greenwald wrote in Allmusic, the Carlos Santana here returns to his blues roots while maintaining his Latin style. Furthermore, it was a tribute to Michael Bloomfield, in its early years, strongly influenced a guitarist Santana and on the album The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper 1969 he has starred.
