Boann

Boann (older Bóand [' Boand ], neuirisch Bóinn, even spellings like Buann or Boind appear ) is a figure of Celtic mythology of Ireland and there the river goddess of the River Boyne. The mythology tells that she had the secret source of her husband Nechtan in Síd by walking around against the sun's path ( tuaithbel ) profaned what she had drowned in it and the Boyne was born. The name Bóand probably means " white cow ". It applies after the Lebor Gabála Érenn daughter of Delbaeth or Tuirenn and wife of Nechtan or Elcmar.

In a narrative of the Mythological Cycle seduces the Dagda after it has sent her husband on a mission to Nechtan with Nuada of the Silver Hand and bears witness with him Angus and Étaín.

In the Táin Bó Froích ( " The expelling of cattle Froechs " ) she is the sister of Bé Find and aunt of the title character Fröch.

The area around the pre-Celtic grave mound at Newgrange in the Boyne Valley are named after her Brug na Boinne.
