Bob's Birthday

Bob 's Birthday is a Canadian- British animated short film directed by David Fine and Alison Snowden from the year 1993.

Action

Margaret Fish prepares for her husband secretly preparing a celebration for his 40th birthday. Bob, who works as a dentist, believes a restaurant for the evening visit was planned. Dealing with patients, one of whom told him that among dentists there is a high suicide rate, and another gives him a toilet paper holder, plunge him into the mid-life crisis. In addition, he says secretly for his receptionist, which ensures the whole day, the plants treated with Entlausungsmitteln and so for constant leaf fall.

In common Margaret house looks like Bob comes home. She asks the numerous guests to hide and only appear on the keyword "Surprise". Bob, however, makes no Margaret to welcome food and tightens around it - he only appears with shirt and tie wearing and refuses to wear pants, because finally the curtains were drawn. He begins to put his life into question, noting that all the friends of the two would actually be incredibly boring. He asks Margaret if she would like to have children if she still finds him attractive, and whether he should give up his job. In the end he gets into his car, waiting for Margaret to go eat as planned. After a short break Margaret deletes the lights in the house and follows him. When the car is gone, the guests arrive in the dark slowly from their hiding places.

Production

Bob 's Birthday emerged as a co-production of Snowden Fine Animation, Channel 4 and the National Film Board of Canada for Channel 4, the film was released in December 1993.

The short film is based the animated series Bob and Margaret, which ran from 1998 to 2001 and consisted of four squadrons.

Awards

Bob 's Birthday won the 1995 Academy Award in the category " Best Animated Short Film ". At the Ottawa International Animation Festival Snowden and Fine received the Gordon Bruce Award for Humor.

Bob 's Birthday was " Best Short Film " nominated for the Genie Awards in the category, but lost Arrowhead. At the Berlinale 1994, he ran in the competition for the best short film, but could not prevail against ashes of Ferenc Cakó itself. He was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Animated Short Film, but the Wallace & Gromit - The Wrong Trousers won.
