Bob Magnusson

William Robert " Bob" Magnusson ( born February 24, 1947 in New York City ) is a jazz bassist who has emerged both as a studio musician, on the other hand, as a leader of his group Road Work Ahead.

Life and work

Magnusson, son of a classical clarinetist, he studied French horn and moved in 1967 to the double bass. In 1968 he was a member of the Buddy Rich Big Band, and turn right after 1972/73 of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. In between, he accompanied Sarah Vaughan ( 1971-72, again in 1975-76 ), then to work with Art Pepper, Benny Golson, John Klemmer and Joe Farrell. Between 1979 and 1982, was the band 's Road Work Ahead with the albums Revelation (1979) and Road Work Ahead (1980). Under his own name also Song For Janet Lee appeared (1984). With the orchestra of Nelson Riddle, he accompanied 1983-1985 Linda Ronstadt. As a studio musician in Los Angeles, he worked on recordings of the Singers Unlimited, Natalie Cole, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, 10,000 Maniacs and Madonna. He also worked with jazz musicians such as Bud Shank, Laurindo Almeida, Shorty Rogers, Bob Cooper, Lou Donaldson, Clifford Jordan, George Cables, Joe Pass, Carl Fontana, Kenny Barron, Freddie Hubbard, Holly Hofmann and Slide Hampton.

He also served 1977-1996 as a music teacher at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood operates. In 1998 he was part of the faculty at San Diego Mesa Community College and the Coronado School of the Arts, where he taught harmony, music theory, and jazz improvisation. In 1999 he published his book The Art of the walking bass from Hal Leonard.
