Bohdan Winiarski

Stefan Bohdan Winiarski (* April 27, 1884 in Bohdanów, powiat Łomżyński; † December 4, 1969 in Poznań ) was a Polish lawyer. He served from 1921 as professor at the University of Poznan and belonged from 1946 to 1967 as a judge to the International Court at, including 1961-1964 as President of the Court. His academic work for which he was admitted, among other things, 1929 in the Institut de Droit international, related in particular to the Polish and the French constitutional law, and international water law.

Life

Bohdan Winiarski was born in 1884 in Bohdanów in the powiat Łomżyński and studied from 1905 to 1909 Law in Warsaw and Krakow. He received his doctorate in 1910 at the Jagiellonian University and then continued his studies from 1910 to 1911 in Paris and Heidelberg. After he initially taught at the School of Political Sciences in Krakow after, he joined in 1921 as a professor at the University of Poznan. In the 1920s he was a member of the Polish delegations to several meetings of the Assembly of the League.

From 1921 to 1927 he was a member and from 1925 to 1927 president of the committee of the League of Nations to the river right, so for the regulation of interstate relations in the use of rivers. In 1944 he was a member of the Inter-Allied Committee on the Future of the Permanent Court of International Justice. Two years later he was elected judge of the newly established International Criminal Court. He held that post until 1967 and during this time was 1961-1964 President of the Court. In addition, he served as president in 1965, taking place in Warsaw 52nd session of the Institut de Droit International, which he joined in 1929.

Bohdan Winiarski died in 1969 in Poznan.

Work

The scientific work of Bohdan Winiarski consisted primarily of works on the Polish and French constitutional law as well as international water law, particularly the flow law. He also made ​​important contributions to a better understanding of international law in his home country and the Polish legal system abroad.
