Bois-Sainte-Marie
Bois -Sainte -Marie is a commune with 199 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Saône -et -Loire in the Burgundy region. It belongs to the canton of La Clayette and the Local Government Association Pays clayettois.
Geography
Bois -Sainte -Marie is located in brionnais, 37 kilometers northwest of Macon, surrounded by the municipalities Gibles, Colombier -en- brionnais and Curbigny.
History
The ancient name of Bois -Sainte- Marie, Sancta Maria de Bosco, recalls that the village was formerly in a forest. The name was first mentioned in 998 in a collection of documents from Cluny. There was originally a priory in the village, which was destroyed in the 16th century during the Wars of Religion ( 1562-1598 ).
In the Middle Ages Bois -Sainte -Marie was surrounded by a city wall with three city gates. After the destruction of the citadel on the mountain Dun ( Saint- Racho ) in 1181, the population of Bois -Sainte -Marie grew. The town became the seat of a royal seat of an archpriest castellany and who managed 32 parishes. In Bois -Sainte -Marie, there was a Mint (Hôtel des Monnaies ), a salt chamber for Gabelle ( " salt tax") and a royal Prévôté. In the early 15th century, the town suffered from attacks by marauding Armagnacs. And later in the 15th century lost Bois -Sainte -Marie in importance, while La Clayette gained in importance.
During the French Revolution (1789-1799) Bois -Sainte -Marie had been renamed Bois Marie. 1793 Bois Marie was given the status of a municipality and was cantonal capital. In 1801 it received the present name, the right to local self-government.

The Romanesque church from the 12th century in 1862 officially classified as a monument historique ( " historical monument ").
