Bolshoy Irgiz River

The Great Irgis in Saratov Oblast

The Great Irgis (Russian Большой Иргиз, Bolshoi Irgis ) is a left tributary of the Volga River in Samara and Saratov oblasts to the south-east of European Russia.

Description

It rises in the ridge Obschtschi Syrt south of Samara, right on the border of Orenburg Oblast. First, it flows in a westerly and north-westerly direction through the south of Samara Oblast. In Pestrawka he turns to the southwest and reached a little later the Saratov Oblast.

Then the Great Irgis flows strongly meandering in mostly westward and finally reaches the city Pugachev. Shortly thereafter, he opens after a run of 675 km below Balakowo in the Volgograd Reservoir on the Volga.

The Great Irgis is a steppe river, very slow and on average only about one to three feet deep. It is therefore not navigable. Its width is between 25 and 45, in the region of the mouth 84 m. His cleared shores are densely populated. In the sandy shore mammoth bones have been found.
