Borassodendron

Borassodendron is a native to Thailand and Borneo Palm genus.

Features

The representatives are large, single -stemmed, non-reinforced fan palms. They are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ) and repeatedly flowering. The stem is erect and densely covered with leaf scars. The leaves have razor-sharp edges stick. The leaf blade is induplicat ( the segments are V-shaped ) and short costapalmat ( the clearly pronounced midrib extends for some distance into the leaf blade into it ). At the leaf surface sits a distinctly developed Hastula, on the bottom it is missing. The fruits are large.

From the closely related genera to Borassodendron distinguished by the following combination of characters: The male flowers appear singly or in slabs for two to six. The bracts of the male inflorescences are imbricat. The thick endocarp (stone core ) is dense coat and thick, internally ribbed walls. The seeds are grooved in accordance with these ribs.

The chromosome number is unknown.

Dissemination and locations

The genus occurs in southern Thailand and northern part of the Malay Peninsula ( Borassus do adonis ) and ( borneense Borassus ) on Borneo before. The former is rare and grows mostly on deep soils in sandstone hills, partly on ridges in hilly dipterocarp forest. Borassus borneense is locally common on hills in the lowlands, but is absent in large areas with equally suitable locations.

Ecology

The young leaves of Borassus borneense be eaten by orang- utans, which can cause considerable damage to the palm trees. These animals may also be responsible for the spread.

System

The genus Borassodendron is placed in the subfamily Coryphoideae, Tribe and subtribe Borasseae Lataniinae within the family Arecaceae. The genus is monophyletic. Their sister group is Borassus.

In the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the following types are recognized:

  • Borassodendron borneense
  • Borassodendron do adonis

Type species is Borassodendron do adonis ( Ridl. ) Becc. The name consists of the genus name and the word Borassus together dendron = tree.
