Boussac (Creuse)

Boussac ( Occitan Bočac ) is a commune with 1327 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Limousin region. It is located in the department of Creuse, Gueret district, and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Boussac. The inhabitants are the Boussaquins.

Geography

Boussac is located about 33 kilometers north-east of Gueret on the north bank of the Petite Creuse. The branch of the railway line Montlucon Saint- Sulpice- Laurière and the train station to this are now shut down.

History

The name of the village derives from the Latin Bociacum (House of Bocius ). From the 12th century the family de Brosse ruled over the area. The best known were Jean I de Brosse ( Marshal of France ) and Jean II de Brosse. The Château Boussac was built in the 15th century. 1800, the district Brosse was ( until 1926 ) was established, which included the cantons Boussac, Chambon, Châtelus and Jarnages.
