Ahun

Ahu ( Occitan Aiun ) is a commune with 1596 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Limousin region. It is located in the department of Creuse, Gueret district, and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton AHUN. The inhabitants are the Ahunois.

Geography

Ahu is located about 16 kilometers south-east of Gueret in the Massif Central on the west bank of the Creuse. The station of the municipality is located in the district Bousseau -sur- Creuse.

History

The village dates back to the Gallo- Roman settlement Acitodunum. Here settled the Lemoviken. In the Merovingian period of the martyrdom of Silvanus of AHUN falls on 16 October 407, the namesake of the local church.

  • The Viaduc de Busseau, which was designed by Gustave Eiffel for the railway Montlucon Saint- Sulpice- Laurière, from the years 1864/64 ( Monument historique since 1975)
