History

The television tower was designed by Lúcio Costa and built 1965-1967. On March 9, 1967, he was officially inaugurated. Costa, who was instrumental in the development of Brasília, saw the tower already in its competitive plans before 1956 with precise details. In its Explanatory text on the draft Costa described:

" [ ... ] And the tower for the radio transmission, which is planned as a triangular structure and stands on a monumental basis of exposed concrete. About the floors of the studios of the station, a superstructure made of metal rises with a viewing platform halfway up. "

The original 218 -meter-high tower in 1987 increased by 6 meters.

In the years 2010 to 2012, a new television tower for broadcasting of digital television was built to the northeast of the city.

Since August 2013, the Television Tower lasting several months renovating is closed. In addition to the steel truss structure, the elevators are to be renewed. The work is expected to be completed in April 2014 and cost around 12 million reais.

Description

Location

The TV Tower stands in downtown Brasília on a central, artificially built hill between the two main axes, Via Norte Oeste To and Via Sul order Oeste on a motorway-like cloverleaf cross. Right next to the tower is the bus station. On the large-scale parking and open areas around the tower since 1970 also a weekly market takes place.

Architecture

The triangular in plan platform of exposed concrete at the tower base represents the division of the three branches of government. It rises a few feet above the ground and is supported by massive pillars. In the glass-enclosed floor there are operating rooms.

The basic triangular shape continues in the rest of the building. The tower, together with the square of the three powers, the so-called monumental axis of Brasília city plan. The simple, upward linear tapered steel truss tower can be seen as a modern interpretation reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower.

At 75 meters there is a free, open- air observation deck and is accessible via lifts daily.
