Brun Campbell

Sanford Brun Campbell ( born March 26, 1884 in Oberlin, Kansas, † November 23, 1953 in Venice, California ) was an American ragtime pianist and hairdresser.

Life

Campbell had early piano lessons, also allegedly 1898 in Sedalia at Scott Joplin, and was among the first ragtime pianist, one of which records were taken. He worked primarily in the southwestern United States before then in 1908 opened a hair salon in Tulsa; from 1928 he ran a salon in Venice (California ), which he led until his death. In the 1940s, he briefly returned to music and played several versions of the Maple Leaf Rag and other ragtime one, as he had heard that Scott Joplin's widow lived in poverty. He also published about the early jazz.

The authors Richard Cook and Brian Morton Campbell are among the few survivors of authentic ragtime era from before Eubie Blake, Jelly Roll Morton and Willie "The Lion" Smith. His recordings are considered as typical examples of the Midwestern Saloon Ragtime.
