Buenos Aires Jazz Festival

The Buenos Aires Jazz Festival is a music festival that was organized for the first time in 2002 by the city government of Buenos Aires. It takes place at various venues and achieved in recent years, about 36,000 listeners.

Overview

The Buenos Aires Jazz Festival was partly inspired by the " café- concerts " that were popular in the Argentine cities since the 1960s and 1970s. Another model was the Jazzología by Carlos Inzillo, which was held for the first time in September 1984 and is the oldest, still existing Jazz Festival in Argentina.

In the 1990s took place irregularly jazz festivals in different Argentine cities, including Buenos Aires, Rosario and La Plata. The current Buenos Aires Jazz Festival has, against all reason, in the midst of the severe economic crisis of 2002 launched by the city government of Buenos Aires and was held from 6 to 20 August 2002. Admission was free, it played mostly local musicians, including notably Pablo Ziegler and Dino Saluzzi.

The success led to a sequel, which took place from 10 to 16 April 2003, the participation of the Centro Cultural General San Martín. The events were no longer free, the artists included the US-American Jane Blackstone. Since then, artists such as Kenny Barron, Anthony Braxton, Michael Brecker, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Fred Hersch, Freddie Hubbard, Rosa Passos, Chucho Valdés and Randy Weston have performed there. Since 2007 the pianist Adrián Iaies is the Artistic Director of the Festival.
