Bulls, New Zealand

Bulls is a small town near the South Taranaki Bight on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

It is located in a thriving agricultural area in the Rangitikei district at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 3 about 160 kilometers north of Wellington.

At the 2001 census it had 1,755 inhabitants.

The former Bulls Bridge spanned the southeast of the Bay of the Rangitikei River. She broke in 1973 suddenly without asking fatalities.

Many of the pilots of the nearby base of the Royal New Zealand Air Force in Ohakea live in Bulls. The former Formula 1 driver Chris Amon was born here and has nearby a farm.

The city is named after James Bull, who founded the city and was the also the first general store in town. Originally the town was named Bull Town, was renamed in Clifton and finally, again renamed at the insistence of Sir William Fox, second Prime Minister of New Zealand in the late 19th century Bulls.
