Burghölzli

The Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich, traditionally called, and popularly Burgholzli, is one of the University of Zurich nationals psychiatric clinic. It is located at Burgholzli, a wooded hill in the district Ries creek in the southeast of the city of Zurich.

History

The establishment of the clinic went decisively to Wilhelm Griesinger back who has trend- influenced psychiatry of his time: Griesinger advocated a more modern and more humane image of the patient. From 1860 to 1865 he worked as Head of the Department of Medicine in Zurich and became the founding father of the clinic.

The castle- like scale, monumental neo-Renaissance building of the clinic comes from the Zurich architect Johann Caspar Wolff and was built in the years 1864-1870. The opening of the clinic was held in 1870. Your first director was Bernard of Gudden who combined his executive directorship with a teaching position at the University of Zurich. This link took before his successor. Because the hospital management held from Gudden only until 1872, his influence on the Burgholzli was comparatively low. In a comparison with his successors especially Auguste Forel protrude (Director 1879-1898 ) and Eugen Bleuler (Director 1898-1927 ). Among the renowned psychiatrists who are temporarily working at the clinic include besides those already mentioned, Carl Gustav Jung, Karl Abraham, Ludwig Binswanger and Eduard Hitzig. Also worked at the clinic was the Nazi racial theorist Robert Ritter.

In 1911, the Department of Psychiatry was established, which was integrated in 1970 into the Canton Hospital. 1967/68, the walls were demolished by the Burghölzli. 1970, the Social psychiatric service was established, which in 1994 was integrated with the introduction of the new sector organization in the Psychiatric University Hospital. 1996 Gerontopsychiatrische Hegibach center was opened. In 2013, the sector organization to be abandoned.

Among the prominent patient Sabina Spielrein included, among others, Heinrich Leuthold and Eduard Einstein.
