Burkburnett is a city in Wichita County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in north Texas, a few miles north of Wichita Falls, on the border with Oklahoma and has a total area of 24.6 km ², without significant water surface.

History

As of 1856, this area was settled by ranchers and the small village called Ville nests. 1880, the village had a mixture stores and 132 inhabitants. 1906 sold the Rancher ' Samuel Burk Burnett ' an area of 65 km ² in the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway, so that they could lay their rails to Oklahoma and Kansas. A year later, the first post office was opened. In 1905, the small town of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was here for the wolf and the rancher Burnett to guest, renamed in Burkburnett.

After the first oil discoveries in 1912 the population rose rapidly to around 20,000 in 1918. During the Great Depression, the number fell to a few thousand, and in 1936 the town had only 3281 inhabitants. Only with the construction of the Sheppard Air Force Base in 1941, the city recovered.

A published in the Cosmopolitan article entitled: A Lady Comes to Burkburnett was the inspiration for the 1940 film shot Bomm Town with Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable in the lead roles.

Demographics

According to the census of 2000, there were 10,927 people in 4139 households and 3108 families. The population density was 443.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 90.67 % White, 2.88 % African American, 1.06 % Native American, 0.64 % Asian, 0.07 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 2.66 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.00% were of mixed descent, and 6.20 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4139 households 36.7 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.5 % were married couples living together. 11.3% were single mothers and 24.9 % were non-families. 22.3 % of all households were single-person households, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size amounted to 3.05.

27.9% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.8 % from 18 to 24, 28.3 % 25-44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 88.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,408, and the median income for a family $ 42,917. Males have a median income of $ 31,720 versus $ 21,977 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,507. 9.5 % of the population and 7.9 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 13.0 % have children under the age of 18 and 8.9 % of those 65 or older.
