CALS (DOD)

CALS objects (Computer -aided Acquisition and Life - Cycle Support, computer-aided acquisition and life cycle support) since the 1980s, the name of a global strategy of authorities and companies to convert extensive technical documentation from paper to electronic documents. Originally CALS was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense, primarily to enforce uniform exchange formats ( such as SGML, CGM and IGES) in the military and defense sector. In addition, their own standards have been defined, such as the CALS table model, which is used for instance in DocBook, TEI and EAD.

Focus and direction of the CALS strategy have expanded over time. Originally Computer-Aided Logistics Support started as (English for computer-aided logistics support), she changed to Computer - Aided Acquisition and Logistics Support ( computerized procurement and logistics support). At present (2006) is understood to be the CALS strategy, all relevant information concerning a product during its entire life cycle ( from planning and development to production to operation and finally to disposal) to electronically store and transmit, leading to the usual definition of the acronym today led.

CALS raster graphics file format

Its development took place within the CALS DOD initiative, the format defines standards for coding and compression of raster graphics ( monochrome bitmap). CALS table model

The CALS table model is a standard for representing tables in SGML / XML format. Its development took place within the CALS DOD initiative, the format is based on the little extensive descriptions and examples of the Mil -M - 38784B specification for technical manuals. For the realization and implementation of technical shortcomings came to light, so that a successor specification by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards ( OASIS ) was necessary.
