Camp Marmal

The camp Marmal (CM ) is the largest camp of the German Armed Forces outside the Federal Republic of Germany. It is close to the Afghan city of Mazar-e- Sharif at the foot of the Hindu Kush. With the construction of the camp began in September 2005 and it has a size of about two and a half times a half kilometers.

The military part of the regional airport ( OAMs ) is in the area of the camp. Within the CM is the Norwegian Camp Nidaros. It is named after the adjacent Marmalgebirge. Originally, however, the name Camp Alexander was planned.

Units

CM hosts the staff of the German Armed Forces in Afghanistan, Regional Command North ( Regional Command North - RC N) of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF ) and the forces of the Quick Reaction Force ( QRF ). This was the first time since July 2008 provided by the Bundeswehr and operated until 2010, and then replaced by two training and defense battalions.

Major General Jörg Vollmer is since 21 February 2013, the commander of the RC North, and thus at the same time, the National Commander of the German ISAF contingent use.

Tasks

At present, a total of approximately 5500 soldiers carry out their Service in Camp Marmal, of which 2,800 German. Other forces make a v. United States, Norway and Croatia as well as 16 other countries, belonging mainly to NATO.

CM is the basis for the tasks of ISAF soldiers as part of their deployment in northern Afghanistan. Property protection, reconnaissance and intelligence gathering as well as projects of civil-military cooperation - CIMIC are in addition to the management and care of the five Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs ) are the main tasks. Here are stationed in the combat wing Mazar-e Sharif, the German CH- 53 and Transall. The stationed here since 2007 tornadoes were removed again in November 2010.

The five PRTs in Kunduz, Feyzabad, Meymaneh, Pol -e Khomri and Mazar -e Sharif will report to RC North. They support and protect the nine provinces under its military administration in the reconstruction. The cooperation with NGOs ( Non-Governmental Organizations - NGOs) and Afghan security forces stands in the foreground.

Medical care

In 2007, the German field hospital was completed. It has the medical facilities and treatment options of a well-equipped German district hospital. Primarily, it serves as an emergency treatment facility for members of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan ( ISAF). In addition, it is within the framework of existing treaties or in acute emergency treatment also German nationals in Afghanistan and aid workers are available. In the context of free capacity and resources and local Afghan citizens are treated. In honor of the fallen in April 2010 doctor it bears his name: " Surgeon Dr. Thomas Broer hospital ".

In addition to two surgical units are various specialist outpatient clinics, an intensive - care unit and a total of 35 beds available. The staffing totals including hospital management, pharmacy and laboratory to about 80 soldiers.
