Campeonato Mineiro

The state championship of Minas Gerais, also known as Campeonato Mineiro, for the first time in 1915, founded the same year Football Federation of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, the League Mineira de Sports Atletico later League Mineira de Desportes Terrestres and called since 1939 Federação Mineira de Futebol, held.

First winner was Atlético Mineiro, today 's most successful club of Minas Gerais. The next ten titles until 1925 all went to the América FC from the state capital Belo Horizonte, which still holds so that together with the ABC FC from Rio Grande do Norte, a national record. 1926 secured the Palestra Itália Sportiva Sociedade, an association of Italian immigrants, also from Belo Horizonte, after four runner-up in their first championship series. This association was renamed in 1942 in Cruzeiro Esporte Clube and should celebrate numerous international successes under that name from the 1970s and a global reputation.

1926 and 1932 were short-term competitive football associations active. The master of these competitions are viewed these days as equal champions. Up to and including 1957, the Championship of Minas Gerais was the city of Belo Horizonte championship, but also took part at the locations of the periphery. Since 1958, the provincial teams from Minas Gerais are regular participants.

However, the title did not go only twice in the capital. 2002 won AA Caldense from Poços de Caldas the title. In that year, however, attended only province associations in the state tournament. The capital clubs played in that year to the Copa Sul - Minas, which qualified for participation in the national Copa dos Champ. Cruzeiro won the " Sul - Minas ". Cruzeiro and Caldense finally played out a finale to a Supercampeonato, which won the capital city. Both clubs may nowadays call the state champion of 2002. 2005, the aspiring Ipatinga FC won from the same city with a quarter of a million inhabitants as the first and only provincial association the sole championship of the year.

Minas Gerais is considered alongside São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul as one of the four most important footballing states of Brazil.
