Canberra United FC

Canberra United FC is an Australian women's football club from Canberra. The first womens team plays in the top division of Australia, the W-League. The club was founded in 2008 and is the only club in the W-League without an appropriate professional men's team in the Australian A- League. In the 2011/12 season the club won its first championship.

History

2008 - Year of establishment

For further development of women's football, the Australian football federation founded in 2008, the first women's football professional league in the country. Seven of the eight founding members were established clubs in the men's professional league (A- League) with their respective women's teams. In the same year, the Canberra United FC founded as an independent women's football club and joined as the eighth founding member of the new league. First coach of the club was the former Australian international Robbie Hooker.

2008/ 09 - First Season

In the first season of the W-League, the team could earn the third place league and move as one of the top four teams in the play- off round. After a victory (0-1) in the semi-final against Newcastle Jets, the Canberra United was defeated in the Grand Final against the Queensland Roar for a final score of 2-0 and thus missed the championship victory scarce.

2009 - Second Season

Prior to the 2009 season, there was a coaching change at Canberra United. Robbie Hooker changes to the management of the club and was replaced by Ray Junna as head coach. With many new players, the team reached the fourth place in the table at the end of the season and moved again in the playoffs. There, however, the club lost 3-0 in the semi-final against Sydney FC.

2010/11 - Third Season

At the third season of the W-League participated in only seven teams after the Central Coast Mariners in mid-2010 had left the league. The Canberra United could undertake the Australian Player of the Year Michelle Heyman. Under Head Coach Junna again succeeded in gaining in third place in the playoffs. As last year, the team lost in the semifinals. After a 2-2 aet they lost the Brisbane Roar in the penalty shootout 4-2.

2011/12 - Fourth Season

Before the start of the 2011/12 season coach Ray Junna left the team. Canberra United obliged the former Czech national player Jitka Klimková as the first female coach of the club. The new coach led the team to the top spot for the first victory of the W-League Premiership. Thus, the team moved into the playoffs. In the semifinals, scored a 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory. On 28 January 2012, the club played in the Grand Final against Brisbane Roar. In their own stadium, the McKellar Park, the team of Canberra United FC won the first championship for the club with a 3-2 victory.

2012/13 - Fifth Season

After the Championship title last year, the club engaged the former German international Ariane Hingst of the W -League rivals Newcastle United Jets. Canberra United FC reached in the 2012/13 season only the fifth place and missed the first time a place in the playoffs.

2013/14 - Sixth Season

With the 2013/14 season Jitka Klimková was replaced as coach. The club engaged the former football player of the Dutch national team and the FFC Heike Rheine German Bundesliga, Elisabeth Migchelsen as a new trainer. Ariane Hingst left the club with the contract expires in September 2013. At the end of the season the Canberra United FC won first place in the table, thus winning the W - League Premiership and moved into the play-offs. In the semifinals, the team 1:2 defeated by the Brisbane Roar Women and thus missed the finals.
