In the municipality of 3762 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

After the uninhabited island of Madeira was colonized from 1420 by the Portuguese, was born about 1425 from the Ponta do Sol. 1501 was the seat of a site 's own circle. After briefly later in the church today Canhas already created a first village in 1577 the creation of a separate municipality Canhas was decided to spin-off from the municipality of Ponta do Sol, but this was not implemented until several years later. Canhas has since been its own municipality in the district of Ponta do Sol.

Attractions

The single-nave parish church Igreja de Paroquial Canhas, after their patron saint and Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade (English: Church of Our Lady of Mercy ), is a listed building. The baroque church built in 1756 to show the interior, among other things neo- mannerist and baroque neo- azulejos and altarpieces of polished wood with the originally established in 1508 Mannerist Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos (English: Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels ) is another landmarked religious building in the community.

Another monument in the village is the water meter Relógio da Água da Levada do Poiso. The end of the 19th century built three-storey building well indicated the time intervals at which the allocated irrigation periods could be controlled by farmers connected to the local irrigation canal Levada do Poiso.
