Madalena do Mar is a municipality ( freguesia ) in a circle ( concelho ) of Ponta do Sol, on the Portuguese island of Madeira. 516 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011). The main economic activity in the municipality is the cultivation of bananas.
History
According to legend, the town was in 1457 by an enigmatic nobleman named Henrique Alemão (Portuguese for: Henry the German ) was founded. This is by the Polish king Władysław III. have acted, which is not supposed to have fallen in the Battle of Varna on 10 November 1444 but was able to escape. The Portuguese king had given him asylum and let him live undetected on further to be colonized island of Madeira.
In 1582 the independent municipality of Madalena do Mar was created by secession from the municipality of Ponta do Sol.
Attractions
Built in 1582 parish church Igreja da Madalena do Mar (after their patron also Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena ) is a listed building. The Mannerist building houses inside, inter alia, Altarpieces of gilded wood ( Talha dourada ) and azulejos Rococo King Władysław III. , Said to have lived here as Henrique Alemão, was allegedly buried here.
With the agricultural mansion Casa da Madalena do Mar, also under the name of the owner's family as Solar dos Freitas da Madalena out, there is another monument in the community.

Madalena do Mar is the seat of a municipality of the same ( freguesia ) in a circle ( concelho ) of Ponta do Sol. This is part of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
