System

The genus Canistrum was erected in 1873 by Charles Jacques Édouard Morren in Belgique Hort. , 23, 257 S. aurantiacum with the type species Canistrum E.Morren. The botanical genus name Canistrum derives from the Greek word kanistron, which means as much as "basket "; this refers to the structure of the inflorescences. Morren describes the inflorescence as a flat basket with flowers, similar to those of the young girls wore during the Bacchus celebrations, like those bearing the fruit and vegetable growers in Morren 's hometown of Liege in Belgium.
