Nidularium

Nidularium innocentii var innocentii

Nidularium is a plant genus in the subfamily Bromelioideae, belongs to the family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ).

Only in the rainforest areas of eastern Brazil, there is the genus Nidularium. Your generic name (Latin nidus = nest, nidularius = nest -like) refers to the nesting in the cistern middle inflorescences, they hardly protruding beyond the leaf hopper. It is somewhat confusing that with the similar and closely related genus Neoregelia, the shoot axis is much more compressed and so Neoregelia species are all much stronger nesting. In some species Nidularium the shoot axes are even not compressed and the inflorescence clearly stands out from the hopper. They usually have very decorative colored bracts.

Description

Nidularium mainly epiphytic species grow as perennial herbaceous plants. Derbe leaves sitting on a compressed stem axis and form funnel where water is collected. The leaves are lightly armored.

The inflorescences often have greatly upset shoot axes. The threefold, pentacyclic ( five petal circles), hermaphroditic, radial symmetry flowers are often blue or white. The ovary is inferior.

Flowers formula:

Are formed berries.

Some species and varieties (there are also varieties with variegated leaves ) are grown in special nurseries and so you can find them from time to time in garden centers and flower shops. They are very well suited as houseplants because they are very easy to maintain.

System

The genus was described by Nidularium Charles Antoine Lemaire ( Belgian gardener and botanist ) 1854. For a long time Nidularium was divided into two subgenera, since 1998, received one of these, Canistropsis, the status of a genus (example: Canistropsis billbergioides Syn: Nidularium billbergioides ).

There are over 40 Nidularium species, full list after Luther 2008:
