Carbuncle Cup

The Carbuncle Cup is an architecture prize which is awarded annually by Building Design magazine for the ugliest, completed in the last twelve months in the United Kingdom building.

Background

The price is based on the idea of the magazine Prospect that the Carbuncle Award awards since 2000. The price is supposed to be a parody of the Stirling Prize, which is awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects for the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year. The name of the award is derived from a comment by Prince Charles. He described the proposed extension of Richard Rogers of the National Gallery of London as a " montrösen carbuncle on the face of a loved and elegant friend ". The prize was first awarded in 2006 for the Drake Circus Shopping Centre in Plymouth by Chapman Taylor. A list of nominees will be published annually by Building Design, this usually coincides with the nomination for the Stirling Prize together. By 2008, could be tuned to the website of the magazine, since 2009 selects a small group of critics to the final winner.
